Episode 8 /

Villa Erba - Cernobbio (Co)

The story of the next masterpiece should begin with the fact that this villa belonged to one of the most noble families in the history of Italy - the Visconti di Modrone family. Its most famous representative is my favorite Italian director: Luchino Visconti, or rather Don Luchino Visconti di Modrone, Count Lonate Pozzolo, Signor di Corgelo, Consignor di Somma, Crenna and Agnadello, Milanese patrician - this is how his full name sounds. I have seen almost all of his films and read books about him. My favorites among his works are "Death in Venice" and "Ludwig". His films are the quintessence of great set design, executed with absolute historical accuracy, masterpiece acting and stories, the drama and tragedy of the characters. Luchino was born in Milan, and grew up in a palace on Via Cino del Duca, went with his mother to the Teatro Alla Scala, where the family had its own box, and in the summer the whole family came to Cernobbio at Villa Erba, where he directed children's performances. When a person is born and grows up in an aristocratic family, he is accustomed from childhood to all the rules of etiquette and ceremony, so in adulthood, as a director, he tried to achieve the absolute identity of historicism in set design and costumes in his films, often he brought family items to the set : dishes and utensils, paintings and textiles, accessories and sculptures. It should be noted that with the advent of fascism in Italy, Luchino moved to Rome, where the family had their own house and since then never returned to Milan, where he spent his childhood. Luchino became the absolute antagonist of fascism. During the war, he was in the resistance and even helped many soldiers who fought against the Mussolini regime, hiding them from retribution in the cellars of his palazzo in Rome. His film career after the war and the end of the regime took off and he shot many masterpieces, discovering many names, including: Anna Magnani, Claudia Cardinale, Marcello Mastroianni, Alain Delon, Annie Girardot, Helmut Berger. Visconti is also considered the founder of neorealism in cinema, all thanks to the scrupulousness with which he approached the filming process. Villa Erba is one of the architectural gems of Lake Como. I have been thinking about visiting this place for a long time, but the opportunity presented itself in the form of a textile exhibition, which was held in pavilions on the territory of the villa. I decided to visit the exhibition, and at the same time a masterpiece of architecture. I confess that it took me ten minutes to visit the textile exhibition: it is too highly specialized, but then I decided to walk through the magnificent park with the hope of going inside a historic building. Fortunately for me, the villa was open, there was a restaurant in it, but I was the least interested in it. I went through the main entrance and entered a patio covered with a domed glass structure. Incredible architecture, details and finishes refer to the Middle Ages. I vividly imagined how this noble family lived in this house. On the left - a wide front staircase that leads to the second floor in a private part of the house, along the perimeter on the second floor there are rooms - some of which are open to the public. The rooms are empty, but the walls and ceilings are richly decorated with frescoes, and the floors are luxurious parquet. Views from the windows of the lake complete the ideal image of a real aristocratic palazzo. Only the staff and guests of the restaurant were inside the villa, as well as a few office staff. At first, I was embarrassed to go up the front stairs and went in from the rear: hiding behind the motive to use the "rest room", I climbed the narrow stairs intended for staff, from there, I already went to the balcony of the second floor. Emboldened, I went down the front stairs, imagining what it was like to live in this beautiful place for the huge Visconti family.
