The trip to Varese to Villa Panza was a real surprise for me. In the morning I was surprised by saying that today we are going to see another attraction that takes part of the FAI collection. I love surprises like this. I didn't know anything about Varese before - the city where the villa is located, or about what I have to see. In difficult times, as now, thoughts are filled with worries, sadness and fears, so it is especially important to find every opportunity to distance yourself from the flow of terrible news and bad thoughts. Varese itself turned out to be a modest, provincial town, in the center there is a cathedral, around it there are several main streets, quite pleasant for walking, along which there are restaurants and shops, with a quite decent vintage boutiques. We walked, had lunch and drove towards the villa. After driving up a narrow road up the hill, we stopped at a square near our destination. Villa surprised us with its location in relation to the road. Unlike other similar buildings, with its front facade oriented towards the road, this villa, built in the shape of the letter U, faced the garden with its main facade. We parked in the courtyard parking, which, by the way, turned out to be free for FAI card holders - how much we have already saved with this card? Since we arrived half an hour before the start of the tour, we decided to take a walk in the park. A luxurious garden, looking at the whole city from a hill, filled with Japanese camellias, magnolias and bushes as well as the shining sun, made for a pleasant walk. At the appointed time, the guide was waiting for us in front of the sculpture of the author Meg Webster, which was an inverted steel cone filled with water, which reflected the ancient architecture of the villa. I confess that modern sculptures inscribed in a historical context are an absolute delight for me. In a group of 30 people, there were only eight - another pleasant circumstance. The guide began her story with a historical note - the villa was built in the 1700s and belonged to the Marquis Menafoglio. Subsequently, the villa changed owners and in the 30s of the XX century belonged to Prince Giuseppe Panza. Luigi Canonica and my favorite Piero Portaluppi contributed to its reconstruction. In 1996, the villa came into the possession of the FAI, and before that, its owner has collected an incredible collection of contemporary American art under its roof. Giuseppe Panza often traveled to America and from the late 50s began to collect American art. His main passion was the work of young American artists working in minimalist style. In total, his collection includes more than two thousand five hundred works, among which there are some by Rothko. The villa contains one hundred and fifty works by various artists, including: James Turrel, Dan Flavin, Max Cole, Phil Sims, David Simpson, Alan Graham and many others. The combination of historical interiors filled with pieces of furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries, combined with monochrome paintings by these authors, makes an indelible impression. The enfilade of rooms, which continues in the garden with trees planted in the form of a gallery, creates a feeling of infinity. The villa was used by its owners for receptions of high-ranking guests, parties and various art events. The old stables have been converted into exhibition spaces, with each room dedicated to a different light sculpture designed by Dan Flavin specifically for the Villa Panza. The guide drew our attention to what principle was taken as a basis by the artist: for example, being in a room where a light sculpture was exhibited, flooding the entire room with orange light, we were asked to look into the corridor illuminated by the light from the window, and it turned out that the eye perceives ordinary white light from the windows as blue. The artist used this principle in all his works, turning the whole room into an art object. We were also surprised by the works of Max Cole - canvases of huge size, which depict horizontal stripes that seem voluminous from a distance, but only when you come close to the work, it becomes clear that they are flat. To be honest, I had to run around the villa twice, because I wanted to capture it in my lens without unnecessary details. I am amazed by the fact that all FAI properties have been handed over to the management of their owners at no cost. All for the sake of preserving the history and collections to which their owners have dedicated their entire lives. Another funny episode: when I entered the former master bathroom on the second floor, I immediately recognized the handwriting of my favorite Piero Portaluppi, who had a hand in its reconstruction.

Сам Варезе оказался скромным, провинциальным городком, в центре - кафедральный собор, вокруг него несколько основных улиц, вполне приятных для прогулок, вдоль которых расположились рестораны и магазины, среди которых есть вполне приличные винтажные бутики. мы погуляли, пообедали и поехали в сторону виллы. Проехав по узкой дороге, ведущей вверх на холм, мы остановились на площади рядом с нашим пунктом назначения. Вилла удивила своим расположением по отношению к дороге. В отличии от остальных подобных построек, ориентированным парадным фасадом в сторону дороги, эта вилла, построенная по форме буквы U главным фасадом выходила в сад. Мы припарковались на парковке во дворе, которая, к слову, оказалась бесплатной для владельцев карт FAI - сколько мы уже сэкономили с этой картой. Поскольку мы приехали на полчаса раньше начала экскурсии, решили прогуляться по парку. Роскошный сад, смотрящий на весь город с холма, наполненный японскими камелиями, магнолиями и кустами, а также светившее солнце, располагали к приятной прогулке. В назначенный час гид ожидал нас напротив скульптуры автора Мег Вебстер, которая представляла собой перевернутый стальной конус, наполненный водой, в которой отражалась старинная архитектура виллы. Гид обратила наше внимание на то какой принцип был взят за основу художником: например находясь в комнате, где выставлена световая скульптура, заливающая всю комнату оранжевым светом, нам предложили посмотреть в коридор, освещенный светом из окна, и оказалось, что глаз воспринимает обычный белый свет от окон ка голубой. Этот принцип художник использовал во всех своих работах, превращая всю комнату в арт-объект. Удивили также работы Макса Коула - полотна огромного размера, на которых изображены горизонтальные полоски кажущиеся объемными с расстояния, но лишь подойдя вплотную к работе, становится понятно, что они плоские. Признаюсь честно, пришлось пробежаться по вилле дважды, поскольку хотелось запечатлеть ее в моем объектива без лишних деталей. Меня поражает тот факт, что все объекты FAI были переданы в управления их владельцами на безвозмездной основе. Все ради сохранения истории и коллекций, которым их владельцы посвятили всю жизнь. Еще один забавный эпизод: войдя в бывшую хозяйскую ванную на втором этаже я сразу же узнал почерк моего любимца Piero Portaluppi, который приложил руку к ее реконструкции.
